The serialised version of the novel is first published in an abridged version in three instalments in Collier's Weekly (US) in 1956 between July 20 (Vol. 138, No. 2) and August 17 (Vol. 138, No. 4): Dead Man's Folly.

In the UK, the serialisation is first published in an abridged version in six instalments in John Bull (UK) in the same year between August 11 (Vol. 100, No. 2615) and September 15
(Vol. 100, No. 2620) under the same title.
