The short story is first published in The Sketch Magazine (UK) on September 24 in 1924 (No. 1652) as part one in the series Tommy and Tuppence under the title Publicity (together with A Fairy in the Flat).

In the US there is no publication prior to the one in the short story collection published in 1929.

Alternative title:

The short story has also been published under the title It Must Have Been a Fairy in The 20-Story Magazine (UK) in January 1930 (Vol. 16, No. 91).
