The short story is first published in The Sketch Magazine (UK) on October 8 in 1924 (No. 1654) as part three in the series Tommy and Tuppence (together with The Gentleman Dressed in Newspaper): Finessing the King.

In the US, there is no publication prior to the one in the short story collection published in 1929.
