The short story is first published in The Sketch Magazine (UK) on October 24 in 1923 (No. 1604) as part five in the second series of The Grey Cells of M. Poirot.

In the US the short story is first published in The Blue Book Magazine in December 1924 (Vol. 40, No. 2) under the title The Italian Nobleman with an unsigned illustration.

 

Alternative title:

The short story has also been published under the title The Regent Court's Murders in Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine (US) in 1963 (Vol. 42, No. 1).
