The short story is forst published in The Sketch Magazine (UK) on November 12 in 1924 (No. 1659) as part eight in the series Tommy and Tuppence under the title The Matter of the Ambassador's Boots.

In the US there is no publication prior to the one in the short story collection published in 1929.
