The short story is first published in The Strand Magazine (UK) in January 1942 (Vol 102, No. 613): The Case of the Caretaker.

In the US the short story is first published in Chicago Sunday Tribune on July 5 in 1942 under the same title.


Alternative version:

An earlier authored version of the short story exists under the slightly revised title The Case of the Caretaker's Wife.
However, this version of the short story was not published until later in John Curran's book Agatha Christie's Murder in the Making. Stories and Secrets from Her Archive 2011.
