Original publication: The short story is first published in The Grand Magazine (UK) in March 1929 (Vol. 55, No. 289). In the US the short story is first published in Detective Fiction Weekly on June 22 in 1929 (Vol. 42, No. 3).
Alternative title/Version: The short story has also been published under the title The Man in the Empty Chair in Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine (US) in 1955 (Vol. 25, No. 1). NOTE! The short story also exists in an unpublished playscript version under the title Someone at the Window (without Harley Quin and Mr Satterthwaite).
