The short story is first published in The Sketch Magazine on November 7 in 1923 (No. 1606) as part seven in the series The Grey Cells of M. Poirot.

In the US the short story is first published in The Blue Book Magazine in July 1925 (Vol. 41, No. 3).


Alternative title:

The short story has also been published under the title Shadow in the Night in Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine (US) in 1955 (Vol. 26, No. 2).

Alternative version:

The short story also exists in a revised (longer) version under the title The Incredible Theft.
This version of the short story is first published in Daily Express (UK) on April 6-10 and 12 in 1937 with illustrations by Steven Spurrier.
