The short story is originally published in The Sketch Magazine (UK) in 1924 on January 2: The Unexpected Guest¹.

In the US, there is no publication of the short story version.
However, the (detective) novel version is first published in a serialised version in The Blue Book Magazine in March 1927: The Unexpected Guest.

    The first Swedish edition is also published in a variant cover without serial belonging and in a white cover.
    NOTE! All later editions is published under the title De fyra stora.
 

¹ The short story is later re-worked into chapter one and two in the (detective) novel The Big Four (1927) entitled The Unexpected Guest respective The Man from the Asylum.
