The short story is first published in The Sketch Magazine on October 31 in 1923 (No. 1605) as part six in the second series of The Grey Cells of M. Poirot.

In the US the short story is first published in The Blue Book Magazine in January 1925 (Vol. 40, No. 3) under the title The Missing Will with an unsigned illustration.

 

Alternative titles:

The short story has also been published under the title Where There's a Will in Suspense (UK) in February 1959 (Vol. 2, No. 2).

In addition the short story has also been published under the title Sporting Challenge in Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine (US) in 1961 (Vol. 38, No. 6).
