The short story is first published in The Sketch Magazine (UK) on March 28 in 1923 (No. 1574) as part four in the series The Grey Cells of M. Poirot.

In the US the short story is first published in The Blue Book Magazine in December 1923 (Vol. 38, No. 2) under the title Mr Davenby Disappears with an unsigned illustration.

Alternative title:

The short story has also been published under the title Hercule Poirot: Armchair Detective in Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine (US) in 1958 (Vol. 32, No. 5).
