The short story is first published in The Royal Magazine (UK) in January 1928 (Vol. 59, No. 351) with illustrations by Gilbert Wilkinson.

In the US the short story is first published in Detective Story Magazine on June 9 in 1928 (Vol. 101, No. 6) under the title The Solving Six and the Evil Hour.

 

Alternative title:

The short story has also been published under the title The 'Supernatural' Murder in Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine (US) in 1965 (Vol. 46, No. 3).
