The short story is first published in This Week Magazine (US) on November 16 in 1941 under the title The Tape-Measure Murder.

In the UK, the short story is first published in The Strand Magazine in March 1942 (Vol. 102, No. 614) under the title The Case of the Retired Jeweller.

The short story has also been published in Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine (US) in 1973 (Vol. 61, No. 1) under the title Village Murder.
